Day 77: California Condor

The California condor is the largest flying land bird in North America. They have a wingspan up to 10 feet from tip to tip and can soar up to 15,000 feet in the air. The California condor was really close to extinction. In 1987 about 10 wild condors were left, which were captured to be put in a breeding program. Now with the help of organizations their population is slowly increasing, only 127 of these birds live in the wild today. The reasons for the decline may have been from poison ingestion and illegal egg collection. They also mature and reproduce slowly. They don't breed until they are about six to eight years old. The female will only lay one egg every two years, if the egg is removed the female will lay second or third egg.
