Kingsnakes eat rodents, eggs, birds and even other snakes! They are so named king snakes because of their snake-eating habits. Kingsnakes are in a grouping called Colubrids and all are usually harmless on all contintents except Aulstralia. The one shown is the California mountain kingsnake which can be found throughout California and in southwestern Oregon. The kingsnake is resistant to rattlesnake venom so they can potentially eat a rattlesnakes. California mountain kingsnakes look very similar to the venomous coral snake. The difference is the bands. If red bands are next to black then it's the king snake. If red bands are next to yellow ones then it's the coral snake.
