Day 62: Three Banded Armadillo

An armadillo's armor is made up of overlapping plates covering the back, head, legs and tail. The number of armored bands identifies the different species. The three banded armadillo is the only species that can roll up into a ball. Other species flatten themselves on the ground to cover their stomachs only exposing the armored side. They have poor vision and rely on smell to find insects. They will also use their long claws to dig around for food. They have long wiry hair which they use to feel around. On average they sleep 16 hours a day in their little burrows and they typically come out during the morning or evening to forage for food.
