Day 55: Echidna

Echidnas are pretty bazaar mammals from Australia. They are monotremes, so like the platypus, they lay eggs. To feed their young the females secrete milk from special glands in their pouches; they have no nipples. They have tiny mouths with no teeth and instead a long toungue to lick up termites, worms and ants. Echidnas have spines, which are modified hairs, on their back for protection. Echidnas have the lowest average body temperature of any mammal at 89°F (does not include hibernation temperature). Also Due to their low body temperature and slow metabolism they can live 50 years in captivity.
