Hippopotamuses spend a lot of their time in water. They spend up to 16 hours in the rivers and lakes to keep themselves cool. They can also hold their breath underwater for about five minutes. Their eyes and nostrils are located high up on their face with allows them to to see and breath while being mostly submerged. When they come out of the water to either bask or graze they will secrete a red oily liquid from their skin. This prevents water loss and moisturizes their skin.
