The Malay word for orangutan means "person of the forest." It's no surprise since orangutans are highly intelligent and spend much of their time in trees. They can be found amongst the tropical forest of Sumatra and Borneo. Males are a lot bigger than female orangutans. At a height of about 5 feet, males can reach an arm span up to 7 feet. Males also grow check pads and throat pouches. Orangutans can live around 45 years. Unlike other great apes, orangutans are usually solitary. The amount of orangutans have decreased dramatically from 100 years ago there were about 315,000 orangutans in the wild now there are an estimate of 68,600 left in the wild. Their homes are threatened by deforestation and hunting which have placed them in danger of extinction.
