Velvet ants, as their name suggests, have short red and black hair on their bodies. They may look like ants, but it's actually a solitary wasp that can be found from the east coast of Florida to Connecticut and westward to Missouri and Texas. The males have wings, but the females do not, they do however have a stinger. The female velvet wasps sting is said to be extremly painful and rated as one of the highest on the pain index for insects. Luckily though they are not aggressive and will try to escape first. However, if a person is stung the pain can last for about half an hour. They also go by "cow killer" because they were said that their sting is painful enough to kill a cow, but this is incorect. There have been no reports of it killing a cow or even a human.
