Day 33: Cinereous Mourner

Adult cinereous mourner birds are grey in color and can be found in the rainforests of Peru. As chicks they are a bright orange in color and easy for predators to spot, but there is a reason for this. The cinereous mourner chick mimics the look and movement of a toxic caterpillar to avoid getting eaten. This adaptation is called Batesian mimicry, a survival technique where a harmless animal has evolved to imitate a more threatening species with which it shares a common predator. Batesian mimicry is often seen in insects, but rarely in vertebrates; it's the first time it has ever been found in birds.
