Day 16: Platypus

Platypuses look like a cross between a duck and a beaver. They are stuch bizarre looking animals, but that is what makes them facinating. They belong to a group of egg laying mammals called monotremes and can be found in Australia. They are bottom feeders so they will hunt in the water for larvae, shellfish, and worms in their bill along with bits of gravel and mud from the bottom. Platypuses do not have teeth, so the bits of gravel help them to "chew" their meal. The males have stingers on their heels to deliver a toxic blow to their foe. Platypus venom is not considered to be life-threatening to a healthy human. However, spurring is painful - in part, because platypus spurs are sharp and can be driven in with great force.
